What is Organic Food?

Organic foods are those foods that are produced by organic methods of farming. Organic farming is one that has features which support the cycling of resources. It uses practices that are culturally, biologically and mechanically supportive of an ecological balance and also conserve biodiversity. Thousands of years ago our forefathers used to eat only organic food. They would use organic manure and give cultivated plots time to rejuvenate before planting new crops. There was no question of using insecticides and pesticides or fungicides in those days because natural enemies would automatically come onto the scene when nature was not tampered with. There are serious problems today with products from modern methods of farming. For these reasons it is advisable to use organic products made available online.

The Market for Organic Food

Today the organic food market is expanding rapidly. 40% of Americans stated that organic food would be a big part of their diet within the next twelve months while 63% bought organic foods and beverages not infrequently according to a reliable survey released recently. The organic program manager for Washington State has stated that there has been a rapid increase in the number of farmers involved in organic food in that state. 79% of consumers who were surveyed showed concern regarding the safety of the normal food while 71% asserted that they found organic food to be appealing.

The Reasons for Eating Organic Food

  • Organic food is much higher in nutrients as compared to the traditional foods.

  • According to research organic products are higher in antioxidants, vitamin C as well as the minerals Calcium, Chromium, Iron and Magnesium.

  • They do not have neurotoxins. It is understood that during WWI organophosphates were developed for use as nerve agents. These are now being used in pesticides. Such foods can be very harmful for us.

  • 18% of all GM seeds are today engineered so that they produce their own pesticides. These seeds may continue to produce pesticides inside the body.

  • One of the biggest problems with modern production processes is that when residues of pesticides, fungicides and weedicides as well as chemical fertilisers run off the farms these residues poison water bodies. Humans and animals and birds that depend on these water bodies end up consuming such poisons.

  • The US Environmental Protection Agency or EPA considers that almost 60% of herbicides, 30% of insecticides and 90% of fungicides are potentially capable of causing cancer. It is quite possible that today’s high rates of cancer are due to using such carcinogenic pesticides.

  • While organic food has been tried and tested, the GM food adds up to 80% of today’s average food consumption. GM food is yet to be proven. It is best to wait before consuming such food.
